Charing's Community Alderbed Wood Crisis
Re-planting of the Alderbed woodland and restoration of its ecological habitat as an accessible amenity space for the local community.
About the Project Creator
The Charing Alderbed Committee is a part of the Charing Playing Fields Trust. The Trust was established in 1965 when Granville Wheler gave the land to the people of Charing for recreational purposes. The Alderbed Woodland and an area of wetland meadow were then gifted by the same gentleman to the trust in 2000. The trust is run exclusively by local volunteers and currently provides sports facilities on the adjacent playing fields as well as nature walks through the Alderbed. The committee work closely with community groups such as the pre school and the scouts to organise educational projects which have included mammal and insect surveys, backwoods cooking and foraging. There are also regular events, presentations and guided walks to showcase the conservation methods used and the historical value of this site. The heritage of the wood is managed by the trust volunteers under professional guidance of Kent Wildlife Trust
