The idea
Too many people with learning disabilities are shut out of everyday life. They face prejudice. They’re denied opportunities. They miss out on things many of us take for granted. That’s where we come in. We are a small charity working to change that. That is why we run our outreach project to give those opportunities – offering services to 70 people. Our goal is to be able to provide a full programme of activities that genuinely improve their quality of life over the next year. We want to be able to keep providing one-to-one and group support, skill-building workshops, coaching for volunteer or employment placements, physical and mental health classes, and an expanded literacy programme so that more people can take part
What we'll deliver
- • Provide weekly support and mentoring to help 70 people with emotional health, resolving issues and opportunities
- • Offer employment and education guidance into volunteering, paid work, or studies in schools, libraries, hospitals
- • Run 100 workshops/events a year including mental health sessions, life skills, art, creative, exercise, and gardening
- • Deliver weekly literacy programme, 80% to meet individual targets and 80–85% to improve by one Functional Skills level
Why it's a great idea
Imagine not being able to read this. Some of those we support face this situation. That means no reading of food labels. Not fully understanding bus signs or travel information. Not being able to read and understand important letters or a bills. Low self-esteem holds many back as does a lack of confidence. Not surprising as many of them are socially isolated with little outside contact. Many face barriers to employment or volunteering barriers, yet many want to feel the positive benefits of contributing and helping other people.
We help to bring them together so that they can make friends, manage their emotions, help them learn skills, learn to improve their reading & writing and improve their confidence, all tangible benefits. Above all – with your support – help give them a better quality of life
Steps to get it done
- Identify those most in need and provide support to boost emotions and connection
- Build relationships with local groups offering part-time jobs for people with disabilities
- Plan workshops & coaching shaped by feedback and wishes of people with learning disabilities
