The project will celebrate the centenary of our self-managed Estate, which was built between 1928 and 1932.
The Rose Garden space is currently sadly rundown and little-used. The residents did a huge amount of work in the 1970s to clear it and planted the rose beds that have given so much pleasure ever since. But the roses are reaching the end of their lives, and the lawn is very uneven and floods in winter. As the Estate centenary approaches, it's time to rethink the area and get it ready for the next 100 years.
Our redesign looks back to the Estate's first 100 years through heritage planting of roses and cherry trees; and ahead to the next 100 with new climate-resilient trees and plants, creating habitats for wildlife and improving the clay soil so it can support healthy roots far into the future.
The restored space will serve as a welcoming haven for residents to connect with nature, spend leisure time, and engage in community activities.
What we'll deliver:
- Remodel and refurbish 1,550m2 of garden
- Plant at least 15 trees
- Engage 100+ residents
- Improve 1,300m2 of soil
- Create 4 flower borders for beauty and pollinators
Why it's a great idea:
By fostering collaboration and respect for the environment, our vision is to create a lasting resource where nature flourishes, and neighbours come together to nurture both the garden and the bonds within our community.
Steps to get it done:
- Completion of consultation among residents
- Finalisation of design
- Groundworks - clearance and soil improvement
- Replanting - lawns, wildflowers, trees and ornamental beds
- Community launch event
- Project completion and impact report
