Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

We would like to host an online celebration of Indian Republic Day for the Church Street community. Republic Day is on January 26th and marks the completion of India’s transition from the British Raj to an independent republic. Due to social distancing restrictions and to ensure the celebrations can be carried out safely we will bring the celebrations online to ensure people have the opportunity to participate. We will celebrate Indian culture through online musical and dance performances, poetry, arts and crafts and traditional food. We will ask the Church Street community to register online and we will send them an activity pack in advance with children’s activities, a schedule for the day and some traditional Indian sweets. *We will continue to be guided by safety considerations. In the event of needing to reschedule the event due to lockdown restrictions, we will communicate this via our Spacehive page.*

What we'll deliver:

  • Dance and music performances accessible by all online
  • Art, craft and catering packs free to those who register

Why it's a great idea:

The celebration will help residents' mental health and well being. It will also help those residents who usually travel during this time to India to celebrate Republic Day who may not be able to this year due to coronavirus - they will be able to celebrate Republic Day safely at home. The activity and catering pack will be provided to Church Street residents to get opportunity celebrate Indian Republic Day 2021. An opportunity to bring people together and celebrate the Indian Republic Day. There will be the opportunity for community volunteers to get involved in the project - which will look good on CVs for those looking for work and also provide an opportunity for local people to learn more about Indian heritage.

Steps to get it done:

  • Prepare art and craft packs
  • Prepare catering for the packs
  • Rehearse the music and dance performances

Other boroughs in London, pubs and restaurants already celebrate Indian Republic Day, we are keen to provide this opportunity for Church Street and the rest of Westminster.
