The Brixton Pound CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company based in Brixton, South London. Its mission is to bring together local businesses, residents, VCOs, and the local authority and create a social economy between them. As a result of this work, Brixton is more inclusive, sustainable, and cohesive, as well as a more fun area to live and do business in.
Since 2009, thousands of people have used the Brixton Pound currency. Today over 2,500 people have electronic Brixton Pound accounts and 200+ businesses accept it. The Brixton Pound can even be used to pay Lambeth Council for business rates.
The Brixton Pound cafe is a community asset on the High Street. It offers space for local groups to meet, as well as providing free information about the area. It takes local surplus food and turns it into healthy, tasty meals, saving tonnes of food every year. Everything in the cafe is sold on a pay-what-you-feel basis.
The Brixton Fund is a grant scheme managed by the Brixton Pound, generated through cafe sales, business sponsorship, and usage of the electronic Brixton Pound currency. Since 2015 the fund has granted over £10,000 to local projects.
