The idea
Frith Youth Centre in Bussage, Stroud, is a vital hub for young people, families, and older residents. It hosts youth sessions, a warm room, and the popular Community Café and Lunch Club, offering connection, warmth, and support for those who may otherwise feel isolated.
However, the acoustics in our main hall are poor, with echo and background noise making it hard for people — especially those with hearing impairments or sensory sensitivities — to communicate and feel included. We’re seeking funding to install safe, fabric acoustic panels designed for sports and youth environments to “break the sound barrier” and create a calmer, more welcoming space.
This improvement will make a lasting difference: providing a safer environment for young people, reducing stress and sensory overload, and helping café visitors enjoy conversation and friendship. It will ensure Frith Youth Centre remains a warm, accessible heart of the community for all.
What we'll deliver
- Install acoustic panels in our hall
- Reduce the echo that acts as a barrier to those using Frith Youth Centre
- Improve and maintain our building for the community to enjoy
Why it's a great idea
We will install 40 safe, fabric acoustic panels throughout the main hall at Frith Youth Centre to eliminate echo and create a calm, welcoming space for all. This change will make a huge difference to hundreds of local people who use the hall each week.
The impact: café visitors will hold conversations comfortably, older residents with hearing impairments will feel included, and young people will enjoy sessions without sensory overload. Local groups will be able to meet, run classes, and host wellbeing activities without distraction.
Research shows poor acoustics discourage attendance, and our surveys confirm this: “Can’t hear anyone even with a hearing aid,” said one regular café guest. “Please stop the echo – it would make such a difference.”
Behind this project are Frith Youth Centre staff, volunteers, and community partners determined to make our hall inclusive, accessible, and sustainable for years to come — a true hub where everyone can connect, communicate, and belong.
