The idea

Since 2018, we have delivered training in Bradford to raise awareness of how people can take positive action in their communities, contributing towards local regeneration. We have run programmes on community rights, neighbourhood devolution, healthy neighbourhoods, economic regeneration and environmental sustainability. Each has been and delivered in community venues targeting areas of high deprivation.

After each session, we offered coaching to people with ideas from the training to help them turn these into a reality. This has resulted in spin-off projects and our website www.neighbourhoodproject.org.uk has further details.

We now wish to deliver a new programme focusing on how neighbourhoods can achieve net zero which will cover local and organic food growing; community composting; eco-housing; community-owned renewables; dealing with 'hard to recycle' waste; and decarbonising transport. We aim to support residents to develop a new generation of green spin-off initiatives.

What we'll deliver

  • 20 spin-off projects
  • 1,000 trees planted
  • At least 1 new local food growing project
  • At least 1 new local community composting project
  • At least 1 new community-owned renewable energy project
  • At least 1 new community recycling project
  • At least 1 new eco-housing project
  • 100 more people walking or cycling regularly

Why it's a great idea

The training will allow people to reflect on their lifestyles and how they can work towards a low carbon or carbon neutral way of being. The spin-off projects will help to sustainably regenerate deprived neighbourhoods. The experience people will gain from developing and running their own projects will also help them when applying for paid work or for further education.

Steps to get it done

  • At least 200 individuals engaged on the training sessions
  • At least 20 spin-off projects
