Building on our work with Tower Road Academy, we have taken the decision to host a weekly Saturday children's gardening club, as well as a gardening club during half terms and school holidays.
This will give children in the community an opportunity to discover the joys of being in a garden environment, learning how to sow, grow and harvest fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers from our market garden, set in the heart of Boston town centre.
We provide a supported space where children can learn about the joys of being in a garden and having fun doing a range of activities that promote wellbeing and a living a healthy lifestyle by getting active and growing/eating organic grown vegetables and fruit. We also give them an opportunity to experience a wide range of seasonal outdoor craft actives.
The produce grown during these sessions is donated to other community projects in the locality. These include food banks, community meal clubs and other social enterprises that need fresh produce.
What we'll deliver:
- Fresh produce being grown and harvested to other local social enterprises, foodbanks and community meal clubs
- Children's fitness levels increasing from being outside and getting active
- Improved community links and cohesion
- Encouraging positive behaviour towards the environment and nature
Why it's a great idea:
We believe that getting children outside and into a safe and supported garden environment provides many benefits to them, and also the wider community.
During sessions children will help with the day to day tasks of growing fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers in our market garden. We educate them on the various ways of growing different vegetables, encouraging them to sample what they grow and promote a positive relationship with healthy food.
They are encouraged to take home fresh produce weekly so their friends and family can benefit from their hard work and enjoy the 'fruits of their labour'. Any surplus food that is grown is donated to other community projects and we believe this helps children connect with the rest of their community and improve overall community spirit and links.
Hosting sessions during half terms and school holidays, will help parents that need additional support and child care during these times. We believe this type of club would be a unique offering.
Steps to get it done:
- Planting of first crops in spring
- Harvesting first produce from the garden in early spring from things planted in late autumn
- Donating fresh produce to a local foodbank
