There's a carpark just off the narrow way, we want to transform it into a public square for Hackney. A space for markets, outdoor performances, stalls and and a pop up theatre in a railway arch.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
We are in the process of obtaining all permissions needed. In the unlikely event that these are not secured, no money will be taken from backers. We'll keep you updated! We ran Styx in Tottenham Hale for four years, turning it from a car park into a mixed arts space for the people of Tottenham and beyond. We welcomed The Royal Court, LIFT, Punchdrunk, SoHo Theatre and many many others to our courtyard to dance, sing, play music and share stories. Our space in N17 has fallen under the sword of Damocles and the developers are poised with their bulldozers, so we're returning home to Hackney where we ran a shop full of plays in Hoxton for two years. We want to bring the outdoor vibrancy and creativity of Styx to Hackney Central and fill it with food, drink, markets, sounds and flare and incubator space for buisnesses and a small theatre space with our partners Theatre N16, all the way through the winter until we can start again!

Why it's a great idea:
Hackney is constantly creating, it makes beer, music, clothes, it entertains it's neighbours and sets the agenda for the world. Every powerhouse needs places to play and experiment, to sell ideas and chat over coffee, to hear music and watch plays. We want to build on the creative heritage of Hackney, and allow it a place to thrive. We want to support other businesses to set up shop and cultivate a creative ecosystem on on this pedestrianised street. This give small companies the chance to look outward to the public while building a supportive and generous environment for them to grow. We will also create a beautiful public space for Hackney, as so many spaces are becoming private we want to create public realm for people to enjoy conversations, watch performances and sample the goods that hackney has to offer. We will also (yup! there is more!) create an indoor performance space in partnership with Theatre N16. Here we will programme young and emerging companies!
