The idea
The interactive, free events will primarily focus on science (ex. wildlife walks, rock pooling) and creativity (ex. zine-making, story telling) to attract a broad audience. We will also run an arts competition, with submissions included in a Commonplace Book later exhibited in a local museum as a lasting legacy of local natural history. Other awards will be granted for outstanding contribution to environmental initiatives by individuals/groups. These awards will be presented at our Caper-Ceilidh, where a keynote speaker will also be featured. Overall, we aim to engage the community with their local biodiversity and offer a space to reflect on why it matters, attract new audiences to begin considering their local biodiversity and impact, and foster lasting community collaboration in sustainability efforts.
What we'll deliver
- Host a ceilidh and awards ceremony (funds toward venue and band hire)
- Hold stalls involving an wildlife monitoring session, opportunity board, and tombola
- Partner with local business to conduct a raffle with procedes toward charities
- Rent an exhibition space in a local museum for winners of the art competition and a Commonplace Book
Why it's a great idea
Our events will encourage future contribution to conservation efforts, educate about these possibilities and make a physical positive impact, measured through community involvement. Our impact reaches beyond the day, inspiring participants to engage in future similar activities, and broadly improving conservation engagement in the community. As our second annual Biodiversity Awareness Day, we are aiming for this to be a long-term annual event hosted by the Biodiversity Literacy VIP. By hosting annually, we foster the opportunity for new people to get engaged with conservation and sustainability. However, the variety of activities also allows for experienced people to further their involvement and awareness of conservation initiatives, making the day appealing for all. Collaboration with local businesses will raise awareness of relevant initiatives on a larger scale.
