Berwick Street Market was in danger of losing its identity in March 2016 when Westminster City Council (WCC) gave unexpected notice on all trade licences issued over the last 10 years in favour of a private operator who was going to determine what was to be traded as well as the associated fees. Out of this critical situation, the Berwick Street Traders’ Society was formed (BSTS). We amassed a 37,000-signature petition, raised £5000 in legal funds and challenged WCC over its decision over and over again for a year until the plans to privatise the market were dropped 21 March 2017. In addition, BSTS won ‘permanent’ licenses for all traders 31 March 2017. We are now looking to raise funds to demonstrate that it is possible to bring the vital community asset back to radiant health as a showcase for independent traders serving a vibrant Soho community and all of its visitors. The market has been deprived of funds and much of its infrastructure has been sold off for development, it has lost storage, washrooms, toilets, storage and parking. What is left is the street surface, two taps, a very run down shed in need of refurbishment and a bunch of very passionate people ready to take the challenge, so it is vital that we find new solutions quickly. The market is the vital ingredient in Soho - the health of Soho is reflected in the health of its market, the two are synonymous. A thriving Berwick Street Market keeps the vitality in Soho and we’d love your support to bring Berwick Street Market back to radiant health.
