Baylight festival a shining example

Lancashire County Council News

Morecambe's Baylight festival is a shining example of how Lancashire County Council aims to support businesses and communities to boost the local economy, according to councillors who attended Friday's official launch.\n\nThis weekend marks the second year of the 3-day winter lights event on Morecambe's seafront, with expectations that it will once again attract thousands of visitors during what is normally a quieter time for the town's businesses.

The local economy

The local economy

The parade brought in 14000 people into Morecambe on one night in the traditionally slow period of mid-February, when many businesses do not open. This figure was approximately half of the 28180 visitors who came over all 3 night. Feedback from our post-event business surveys show that businesses have invested in staff, training, equipment for the event and reaped the reward in increased turnover. Our visitor survey showed a large increase on the Baylight '23 numbers of people who moved off the main parade rout and spent money with local businesses in the town centre area. This included people arriving early before the parade and staying late after the parade. Our survey showed that 85% of people attending bought food or drink or other retail items while in Morecambe, with an average spend of £20.20 per person. Most people were on a day trip from home 55%, of the remaining 27% stayed in hotels, 9% stayed in guest houses/B&B's, 5% stayed in Air BnB's and the remaining 4% in motorhomes. Average stay was for 1.7 nights.

The parade night attracted a half of all visitors to the 3 night event, engaging them with high quality light artworks by local, national and international artists. The Winter Gardens recorded a record number of visitors for one day and both the Winter Gardens and the Midland Hotel were used as key buildings on the trail, each hosting at least one installation.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

The mile long parade attracted 14000 viewers and participants who walked with parade, they then dispersed and enjoyed the full length walk along the promenade to see the art trail installations. This brought family members of all ages together for an enjoyable night out, with exercise and health rewarding benefits.
