About the Project Creator
Shelagh Garside
Chair of the Micklegate Business Initiative, Inspiration and driving force behind the Autohorn Micklegate Soapbox Challenge and numerous other events on Micklegate, all with the aim of rejuvenating Mickelgate to it's former glory of being York's finest street.
Shelagh was born in Richmond North Yorkshire in 1960 and has lived in York for the past 18 years and is the owner of Curtain Up on Micklegate.
Shelagh is passionate about promoting Micklegate, it's friendly welcoming atmosphere and wide diversity of businesses, since last year’s soapbox challenge event 10 out of 11 empty shops on Mickklegate have now been opened, footfall in the street is up by 18% (the only street in York to achieve this) and there is a general buzz about town on how the street has lifted its self-up and is a place to visit.
Shelagh's vision for Micklegate - to make Micklegate "The" place to be and visit in York
"We have some of the finest restaurants, cafes, pubs and local shops in York right here on our street. By hosting events like The Micklegate Run, The Micklegate Mingle (free Xmas event) & the Micklegate Yarn Storm, it makes people more aware of what we on Micklegate have to offer."
