By Friends of Backhouse and Barley Mow Parks
This autumn our park volunteers want to plant 10 British apple trees forming an avenue alongside the top field path in Backhouse Park as part of renewing England’s orchards.
Backhouse Park is a wonderful place where local children and dogs can run between trees and down grassy slopes. We don’t do flower beds. And it’s a park that people love. We want to plant an avenue of British apple trees along the top field path where they’ll catch the sun and thrive. Many of England’s orchards have been decimated this century. Our trees will look stunning with blossom in the spring and we have plans for their apples in the autumn. As they mature they’ll reduce CO2 emissions while looking beautiful and the apples they produce will be pressed into fresh apple juice or collected by local communities for food. (Think apple crumble!) When you plant trees you invest in the future. We already have groups of people wanting to be involved; families, schools, local groups supporting mental wellbeing. We just need some money to get started.

Steps to get it done:
Over the covid lockdowns the park has proved to be a quiet place of sanctuary and sanity. It's full of fresh air, positiveness and friendliness.
