Holmepride - Community in Action is a local resident group who's aims are to make improvements within the Holme Valley for the benefit of all.
In 2017, after one of our organised events to clear all the weeds, grass and rubbish from the cobbles / setts around Holmfirth's oldest building, built in c.1597, our group attracted the attention of Kirklees Council after a report of Holmepride's activity reached c.43k people. Kirklees advised it best if we became a constituted group, which we did in November 2017, changing our name from Holmepride to Holmepride - Community in Action.
Since then, our group has become a household name within the Holme Valley for getting things done, with a current following of 2,515 on our facebook.com/holmepride page.
Our activities are very varied, working with schools, churches, local parks, cubs / brownies / rainbow packs, youth clubs plus other community groups needing additional resources and help.
Our most recent initiative in 2021 is to offer a FREE litter picker to any adult or family living within the Holme Valley, after securing a £250 grant from Holmfirth Coop store for this purpose. To date, 204 litter pickers have been requested, with 167 already having been distributed to villagers with the other 37 on a waiting list, which will get delivered once a new order request is available for collection. 71 pickers were requested for children, with those in receipt of a picker sending in photos of their outings, showing rubbish collected on their litter treasure hunts.
Organished litter pickers are arranged throughout the year and J&I schools send in requests for classes to go out litter picking in school time at local parks or school grounds. We provide child size litter pickers and bio-degradable bags, supplied through the Holmfirth Coop store.
Other activities include removing grafitti, cable ties from posts, painting litter bins and posts, maintaining gardens around Holmfirth parks and greenspaces, planting flowers and bulbs and responding to residents requests for help on issues that concern them.
We welcome everyone to join us on our activities, which are advertised on both our facebook page, which is then shared around all local community groups and villages, plus on noticeboards, so not to exclude residents who do not use facebook or a computer.
