Following the theft of the Calvary Cross from the Garden of Remembrance, the reinstatement of the bronze sculpture itself is covered by insurance. The project is to protect and enhance this important sculpture with the provision of CCTV, improved security lighting to the Garden with feature lighting of the cross and more general improvements to the church grounds all for the benefit of the people of Gosforth and beyond.
Draining the adjacent green is the next step in a plan to make better use of our spaces for the community. Sadly at present it is unusable for much of the year! By draining it we aim to be able to hold many more events all year round. We have also made the first steps in rewilding the green with recent support from Northumberland Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers.
From the youngest Beavers to the residents from our adjacent residential home we are seeking to provide greater opportunities to share our space!
What we'll deliver:
- Install CCTV security for the sculpture
- Improve the security lighting of the Garden of Remembrance
- Provide feature uplighters to the sculpture
- Provide a new stone plinth to the cross and sculpture
- Provide ground drainage to church green
Why it's a great idea:
Help secure the sculpture from future theft and provide a welcome, safe environment as a haven of peace for quiet reflection. Make the church green more usable as it becomes waterlogged and muddy in wet weather
Steps to get it done:
- Repair and reinstatement of the Calvary Cross
- Improve the external lighting and provide security with CCTV
- Provide new drainage to church green to improve access
