Heating Albion Row Studios
Heating Albion Row Studio aims to create an insulated self-contained warm pod in our communal project space, and to provide portable heaters for members to use in their individual studios.
About the Project Creator
Albion Row Studio is a shared studio space for 14 artists in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne. We are an artist-led organization operating as an Unincorporated Association.
The project was founded, and it’s led by experienced and multifaceted artists Hannah Christy, Sabina Sallis and Maya Wallis. Among us we have breadth of experience and expertise on leading organising, fundrising and delivering abitious projects on time and on budget.
The project was initiated as a response to multiple Studio closures across the city and as a desire to experiment with modes for sustainable practice and community building.
Albion Row Studio now provides vital work-spaces for 14 Artists. We provide people with space to do their work, to develop their practice, socialise, and share a diversity of perspectives, and ideas across artistic disciplines.
The project is run with a collective responsibility between members. We are keen to experiment with our organisational structure by creating and sustaining co-operative governing principles of honesty, transparency, care, democracy and equality. We are committed to supporting creative and experimental modes of artistic autonomy and production; where artists are able to practice and thrive outside centralised models and mainstream institutions.
We believe that offering affordable, long term work-spaces and immediate community is the most radical and necessary thing we can do now to face an uncertain future.
With our hands and collective coming together we have built 14 individual studio spaces in the post-industrial wearhouse. The building was previously used for industrial purposes, and it wasn’t fit to house artists. The space is divided by stud walls, the floors are original concrete, and the walls and roof are not insulated. Since we built the studios, we have experienced a few winter months. The space is extremely cold and it was hard to work here. Through the Heating Albion Row Studios campaign, we want to change this. We aim to create a warm and welcoming space and also, we want to offer a number of efficient heaters. This will ensure that our organisation can be sustained, and our artists can work comfortably during the harsh winter.
