The environment

This project has contributed to us saving 1800 bikes from recycling centres across Lancashire, Bikes recycled and back out to community through the hub – 484 bikes Bikes donated to groups/schools/community – 200 Bikes saved from landfill - 1800 42,120kg co2e saving

Volunteering, jobs & education

We have linked into local employment support schemes offer olunteering for those looking for work and providing them with a bike as part of the volunteer offer. We have a number of recently released prisoner who have linked into to the project as volunteers helping them embed back into the local community. We have increased our volunteer pool by 10 people who regularly support the project and are now accessing relevant funded training courses.

Arts, culture & heritage

We have provided some bike parts to arts projects both in Blackburn and Burnley.

The Active Cycles Project initially developed as part of Active Lancashire’s Health and Well-Being offer and provides access to high-quality recycled bikes for the East Lancs community.

Thanks to set-up funding from Onward Homes, and volunteer support, the project now has a partly refurbished hub based in the Arndale Centre in Accrington and open for 2 days a week.

Bikes and parts donated by the public and local Recycling Centres are recycled by qualified mechanics, resulting in free and affordable adult and children’s bikes that are certified as safe and roadworthy and can made available for local people, community groups and schools .

Through recycling existing bikes and parts, we are all doing our bit for the environment, preventing the bikes going to landfill and getting more people on their bikes across Lancashire. This means that we are reducing our carbon footprint for years to come.

All funds raised are put back into our charity to enable us to continue our work in this project and to support local people through project involvement, volunteering and employment opportunities.

Our overarching aim has been to establish Active Cycles as a completely community run sustainable enterprise. Though Covid slowed down our plans, donations have continued, meaning that we now have in excess of 600 unloved bikes to fix up and get back on the road for local people to enjoy.

We have given ourselves a goal to get things moving through our East Lancs 600 Cycle - Recycle - Challenge.

This will be a year long project featuring milestones towards the achievement of our overarching goal and benefitting local people, community groups and schools, as well as the local environment.

Our Crowdfunding Campaign will kick-start this process and help turn our plans for the future of Active Cycles into a reality!
