Academy Fields Nature Reserve is a large field that the school and wider community can benefit from. We want to work with the school to tidy the field and pond to be used for outdoor learning, food growing and horticultural and community events. The project will include beds for planting, a pond for learning, an outdoor classroom for science, DT, and horticultural education. The school pupils will be able to be hands on with nature, learn about the environment, and ways to impact the world to be cleaner, greener and more sustainable. This will also provide a great opportunity for volunteering and the school to engage with local gardeners, horticulturist, builders and host community events. The field can also be used for field trips by other schools, team building events and school camping. We hope to restore this space for pupils to reap a hugh benefit from learning outdoors about the environment, global warming, climate change, habitats and ways to live a greener and healthier life

What we'll deliver:

  • Plant 20 Fruit Trees
  • Tidy pond and fix decking around pond
  • Make 8 raised beds for food growing
  • Build a polytunnel for growing
  • Tidy field
  • Horticultural Workshops

Why it's a great idea:

The benefits will support the environment and climate change by planting, clearing up pond, learning about food miles, and other environmental issues. Main benefits will include teaching pupils about the environment, and ways to live a more sustainable and healthier life, through gardening, cooking with local fresh/seasonal produce and ways to make an impact to the environment and climate change. The pupils will also have first hand experience into greening jobs, being able to have hands on experience and training around gardening, environmental and greening jobs, exposing them to new opportunities and careers that they may want to explore. Also the green space will give the wider community and other schools to take part in outdoor learning, horticultural training including field trips, team building events including camping and cooking outdoors. This project will not only benefit the many students at the Academy but also give others a chance for volunteering and learn new skills.

Steps to get it done:

  • Planting plants in pond good for wildlife
  • clearing field
  • creating beds
  • building polytunnel
  • planting fruit and veg
  • planting fruit trees
