The groundbreaking modernist writer is famous the world over. But she also a strong connection to the picturesque seaside town of St Ives, Cornwall. She came here in her youth, staying at Talland House with views across to Godrevey Lighthouse. Her time here is widely thought to have inspired her novels to the Lighthouse and the Waves.
Sadly, there is no public record of her link to the town. We would like to put that right with a plaque on Talland House. As a fitting tribute we would like to install an official “black plaque”, our equivalent of the London blue plaque scheme. In a second brilliant twist to this project, all blue plaques are hand fired by a company in Cornwall. We would love this to be the first of several such plaques in the town but they are expensive ! Fundraising would help us start our campaign:
“Why am I so incredibly and incurably romantic about Cornwall? One’s past, I suppose; I see children running in the garden … The sound of the sea” Virginia Woolf
What we'll deliver:
- A black and white commemorative plaque erected in St Ives on Virginia Woolf’s childhood home
Why it's a great idea:
This will ensure the name and reputation of a groundbreaking writer have greater prominence in the town
it builds upon our rich cultural and heritage life in the town
it suppports our visitor economy
it will help kickstart a cultural town trail leading to further plaques
it will support a local business through the commission of the work
Steps to get it done:
- By March 2022 to have secured funding and planning permission
