The idea
Many disabled, vulnerable and elderly members in H&F rely heavily on receiving a breaking of the fast meal (or Iftar) from Shepherd's Bush Mosque. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the mosque will be closed and these people will face a very difficult situation with many perhaps being unable to afford a nutritious meal at the end of fast. They will also lose the significant social interactions that take place at this important time of year.
This project will alleviate this. We will provide food for up to 100 vulnerable residents every day for the month of Ramadan. The food will be delivered free of charge. In addition to the inherent nutritional benefits, the delivery will offer an opportunity for a social interaction (at a safe distance) with the deliverer and a welfare check to take place as part of that. Where it is identified that recipients of food are in need of further assistance, volunteers will be trained to refer them to the appropriate authorities.

Why it's a great idea
The initiative will benefit up to 100 of the most vulnerable members of the community, as they will be provided with a nutritious meal every day to help them stay healthy during these uncertain times. They will also get a basic welfare check and safe social interaction and basic public health messages in their language to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
Residents will be referred by the 12 organisations within the Hammersmith and Fulham Association of Somali Voluntary Organisations. Residents of Somali origin are one of the largest minorities in the borough. We will also reach out to other community groups to identify vulnerable residents who depend on Iftar meals.
Steps to get it done
- The project entails the nightly delivery of free food over a month
All funds will go directly to the cost of buying food. The project will be administered and food delivered by volunteers.
Babu Salaam restaurant have agreed to source and cook food at a cost of £5/meal.
