The idea

After over 6 years of working in this disparate area, we have found that there are areas of deprivation in the two estates (Field Road & Bayonne) juxtaposed with more affluent areas. As a Church we are well placed to be aware of the areas of need, and to be recognised as an impartial and trusted advocate for youth in our area, and a partner with others. Our aim is to serve the local community through the provision of good quality youth and community work, which will engage young people and encourage them to build positive relationships. We have over 40 volunteers giving 750 hours a year to our local young people. Approx. 200 local young people pass through our youth work every year. We hold two free, action packed youth clubs in our church hall every Thursday.

In order for the youth club to be the best it can be, we want to make improvements to the facilities in the church. By pledging to this campaign you will help provide a safe space with high quality equipment and activities!

What we'll deliver

  • PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE CHURCH SPACE
  • BRING TOGETHER THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
  • GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE A SENSE OF SELF WORTH & RESPECT
  • DIVERT YOUNG PEOPLE FROM CRIME

Why it's a great idea

There are approx. 10,000 people in our Parish, and according to Council figures (2014) as many as 30% of children in the borough, are living in poverty. Youth offending rates of First time Entrants, aged 10-17, are higher than the average rates for London, and the area has been plagued by anti social behaviour, and incidences of knife crime.
We have a credible record of working with disenfranchised young people, providing activities and a supportive framework to make, a long term difference to the community. Before our Youth project opened, there was no Youth Club in the area. We offer a safe place for young people to meet and our volunteers, who are mostly medical Students, who provide positive role models to young people from unstable family backgrounds.

Steps to get it done

  • We've already gathered quotes for the larger work necessary so it will be sorting through priorities.
  • We will then confirm with contractors & match their availability to ours.
  • Deliver the schedule of works.
  • Continue to offer 2 sessions a week inc sport & creative arts and a full summer programme

"The St Albans Youth & Community Worker has rejuvenated youth activity on the Bayonne Estate; helping to transform the estate from an ASB hotspot into a happy and peaceful place to live. She has been instrumental in regenerating the play area on the estate, which children will benefit from for many years to come. She cares deeply for the youths she is helping and her enthusiasm to improve their lives is infectious! Along with implementing long term community change; she is also intent on safeguarding the welfare and future of individual children. She has liaised with the Council, Police and Community groups to push forward real change and given a voice to the youths who so desperately need her help. Well done, the estate would not be the place it is now without you!" Eleanor Jennings, Dedicated Ward Officer Fulham Reach (Metropolitan Police)
