The idea
The South Coast Skate club has been runnning for 3 years turning from strength to strenth. People from all walks of life come down at weekends to use the free skateboards, learn new skills and meet new people. Skateboarding is embedded in a unique culture and we want to give young people from every background the chance to embrace it. The clubhouse will offer young people from 5 years old and upwards free workshops where they can learn to build skate ramps, take skate photography, film and edit skate videos, learn about manufactorting and sales and clothes design as well as skateboarding itself. Our skateboarding club is already successful and we know that young people are interested in skateboarding and its culture. We want to use this interest to take the club to a new level where its appeal will grow to a larger and more diverse audience. The relaxed and informal setting will give young people the chance to learn new skills and interests in a relaxed and fun environment
What we'll deliver
- A safe indoor space to meet up and skate in.
- Two quarter pipes.
- One grind bar.
- A bench to slide on.
- A TV for watching skate dvds on.
- A go pro to use for filming projects.
- A lap top to edit footage on.
- Screen printing equipment to use to make our own club t shirts.
Why it's a great idea
Worthing has lots of activities for families but few options are free. We all know the importance of staying active as well as the importance of getting our children out of the house and away from screens but at a time when the cost of living in the UK is at an all time high this has become a challenge for families. Being a free club will ensure that it is fully inclusive to everyone in the community.
We already know that the South Coast Skate Club is something that young people want- we have seen the numbers grow from 2..20 participants each session
in 4months.We have seen young people from a range of backgrounds forming friendships, supporting each other and having fun while learning new skills & staying active.
Worthing has seen a rise in anti social behaviour recently so a safe place for young people to get involved in postive things that interest them is more important than ever.
Skateboarding is part of the Olympics for the 1st time in 2020 so the sport is about to explode.
Steps to get it done
- Build ramps with members with a qualified carpenter.
- Invite local artists in to decorate the ramps.
- Set up an open day to celebrate the opening of the club.
- Promo the screen printing area of the club.
- Film a promo for the club with help from an established filmographer
- Edit the finished product to use as a learning tool and promote the club at the same time.
Since starting South Coast Skate Club we have seen young people get on a skateboard for the first time, we have watched them smile when they manage to stay on the board and seen them progress to some amazing standards.Their progression brings with it a rise in confidence, a belief that they can do something they didn't think was possible and perhaps most importantly and sense of achievement and belonging to something positive. Watching the same young people come back week after week, forming solid friendships and staying active has been amazing to watch but I know that there is so much more we can offer the young people in the area. I want to give them a safe place to take part in activities that actually interest them. Because the activities at the hub are varied and not just about learning to skateboard, there really is something for everyone from artists to technology fans, music, carpentry and aspiring fashion designers. Everyone can gain new skills and interests while having fun.
