Why it's a great idea
This festival addresses a clear need for free, accessible activities for children and families during the school summer holidays. Evidence shows that holidays widen inequalities for children from lower income households, as many families cannot afford paid activities, trips, or clubs. Ongoing cost of living pressures further reduce families’ ability to access leisure and cultural opportunities.
Children also have fewer opportunities for outdoor, imaginative play, despite strong evidence that play and shared activity support physical health, emotional wellbeing, and social development. There are increasing concerns about children’s mental health, including anxiety and social isolation, and research highlights outdoor activity and positive shared experiences with adults as key protective factors.
By delivering a free, volunteer led event in Wilton Park, this festival removes financial barriers, encourages inclusive participation, and provides at least one positive shared day for child
