Supporting great ideas to make a greener, connected, healthier Cotswolds
To revitalise the community spirit within our village. The hall and surrounding woodland will provide a safe, welcoming space with regular events to meet the needs of all ages and diverse groups.
Withington is a small Cotswolds village with limited transport links and few community facilities; (primary school, church, pub and village hall). The village hall is set in a railway cutting and 2 acres of woodland. The woodland has had to be closed because of Ash dieback. The diseased trees will be removed so the path can safely be reopened; we will replant the area with wildlife friendly plants. We plan to redecorate the hall throughout, fix the roof, replace the flooring and install wifi. New opportunities for socialising and wellbeing will be offered such as yoga, table tennis, U3A and computer support sessions targeting older residents. This project will encourage the community to engage in developing new opportunities and increase the range of activities on offer. This will help address social isolation and improve community cohesion. We've already got the funding to install the new flooring and wifi, we now need your help to fund the tree felling and redecoration!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
By improving the village hall we will be able to offer a wider range of opportunities to all sectors of the community. Wifi has been requested to help facilitate Parish Council meetings and by fitness instructors to access online music. IT support sessions can be provided for older residents. Redecoration will make the hall more attractive to potential hirers, increasing income, which in turn will enable us to implement a rolling programme of maintenance and improvement. Many villagers miss being able to walk through and enjoy the secluded, peaceful woodland (closed currently due to ash dieback). . This will be possible once the ash dieback has been dealt with. There is no meeting place for young people as became apparent during the summer school holidays. Historically, the village had a youth club and the local school used the hall extensively. We wish to improve the hall and surroundings so that the community can see a welcoming space to reintroduce activities for children
Steps to get it done:
Our project has involved the community from the start. The Village Hall Committee all live within the village. As we walk through the village, the committee chat to people about their ideas for the hall. Villagers have been asked to suggest ideas for this project and for events that could be held in the hall and are volunteering to help with cleaning, redecorating. and outdoor maintenance. To help start the Woodland part of the project, the Cotswold Wardens have helped clear the area. This will enable the professional tree surgeons to have easier access.
