We’re a group of local parents who regularly take our children to Wanstead playground in the green on Wanstead High Street and we know it desperately needs refurbishing. The playground has outdated and badly designed equipment which is heavily used due to lack of playground provision in the area. It is in urgent need of renovation, but the Council doesn't have the budget.

The playground on the green is used daily by parents and children who provide crucial trade to local businesses - shopping, eating and drinking. The nearest café - a social enterprise enabling people with learning disabilities to gain work experience - is facing closure too, due to council budget cuts and would suffer badly if the playground deteriorated.

The surrounding areas all use the park due to a substantial lack in playground provision in the area, it being the only playground in the wards of Wanstead and Snaresbrook, and so any improvement to the playground would encourage more visitors to the High Street.

What we'll deliver:

  • Install brand new, modern play equipment
  • Provide more benches and seating areas
  • Include a new toddler-friendly play area
  • Lay new, child-friendly, safety flooring
  • Provide inclusive and engaging equipment

Why it's a great idea:

The playground and park serves all of Wanstead, including Aldersbrook and the Nightingale estates. Children from all of the local schools play here - Wanstead Church School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Nightingale Primary, St Joseph's Convent School, Snaresbrook Primary and Aldersbrook Primary.

There are lots of young children in the Wanstead area, and the playground is well used across the borough but it is outdated and badly designed, with nothing for toddlers, over 7's or children with special needs.

We want to rejuvenate the site with inclusive and engaging equipment to provide play for a wider range of children in the community. We want to keep our children active. Playgrounds can be amazing places of imagination and fun - play helps to boosts their development, independence and skills. With only one playground for every 700 children across the country, children are really missing out.

Children's health and well-being is really improved by access to good quality outdoor space.

Steps to get it done:

  • Install the equipment and open the new playground as quickly as possible
  • Work closely with playground designers to design the spaces
  • Work closely with Vision RCL who manage and maintain the playground for LB Redbridge
  • Work with parents, carers and the local community to develop the best park possible

Our high street has great potential as it has two tube stations, a park, a playground and a church on it, as well as all of the (mainly independent) shops. It is this variety that makes our community an amazing place to live and why people will come to visit us from across the borough. Our playground is a crucial part of it, as it is the source for much of the daytime trade, but it has fallen behind due to a lack of investment in it.

This project isn't all about money. Families and communities can really benefit by coming together and to develop better play initiatives. It's a great way of encouraging volunteering and fostering a strong community spirit.

We also need time, enthusiasm and different skills to get this done. If you think you could lend a hand, by doing anything please do get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.

By building an awesome playground in our popular Wanstead park we can give our children an educational and fun place to play for years!
