The sound of the city

The sound of the city is a theatre, a real stage, where people are the actors. There is no conductor. In this space, the script is called play and the content is determined by the imagination.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The idea

The project is a space within the city centre, along Armada Way, in which adults and children can enjoy the creation of music and sound within a playful environment. The space includes two large scale instruments which freely allow users to experiment with sound in a unique way. The first of the two instruments is a walk-in glockenspiel; the instrument is designed as a table which can be played on both sides allowing group participation as well as single person use. The second instrument includes three large sets of chimes set to a pentatonic music scale which can also be accessed from either side. This pair of objects will be exclusive to Plymouth and be distinctive in their scale, sound and environment.
Within this project we are also hoping to restore the original water course which runs throughout the site and provide a slide to allow the area to be as dynamic as possible and serve as a theatre for spontaneous play.

What we'll deliver

  • The project will involve the refurbishment of a tired space which previously included a small watercourse.
  • New planting seating and lighting will then be installed to complete the composition.
  • This watercourse will be brought back to life, replacing the failed underground pipework.

Why it's a great idea

The scheme will provide an interesting sculptural element within the city centre; creating an experience which will be memorable for the community and visitors alike putting Plymouth on the map. The pace of the city is fast and can often leave no time for social interaction or reflection. This space will provide city goers within an excuse to engage in an activity which differs from their daily routine allowing that time needed to break away from the average day ultimately improving well-being. The proposal will support the surrounding retail and café uses, bringing more activity, footfall and increasing the length of time shoppers are willing to spend here as well as providing a unique attraction for families with children and people with disabilities. The instruments will be tuned to a pentatonic scale it presents the opportunity for workshops and live performances.

Steps to get it done

  • The musical instruments will be manufactured by a specialist company.
  • New planting seating and lighting will then be installed to complete the composition.

Opening Party
We are hoping to open the project in time for summer of next year and to coincide with the Centenary of Plymouth’s Annual Festival of Dance, Music, Speech and Drama. This is an annual competition and celebration of the city’s new performing arts talent across the city. The scheme will stay true to the Abercrombie design for Plymouth. Its height and design within the centre will be eye-catching and unique. The music created by the installations will be inimitable as each person will be crafting their own unprepared sounds generating new and interesting compositions each time they are used.
The sound will be controlled using softened beaters attached to rails within the instruments to restrict the levels of noise created and to reduce the likelihood of the loss of them. At night, to protect the instruments, they will each have a mechanism which locks them and dampens the sound to prevent any damage, noise pollution that may be caused by misuse.
