The idea
We aim to produce an artwork using the-jigsaw-puzzle-like medium of stained glass for Croydon Borough Council. This to create self-awareness about our culture and heritage. Stained glass is centuries old craft that is deeply rooted in people's minds in England and Europe. The window will be created by our talented artist Jamal Rafay who has over fifteen years of experience in the industry. Jamal got amazed by this wonderful craft when he got into stained glass as an artist for historical John Hardman Stained Glass Studio back in 2005. Stained glass is famous for its life-long durability. Stained glass windows lasts from 100 to 600 years to come. This handcrafted artform requires painstaking labour of love but then it is admired globally. We aim to use cultural and local symbols to make it more personal to the target community.
What we'll deliver
- Produce a stained glass window for the local community
Why it's a great idea
We are aiming to raise a voice for togetherness & integration using the art of stained glass. Stained glass leaded windows are made up of different coloured pieces of glass joined together with a core structure of lead. UK has a long legacy in stained glass. The Arts & Crafts movement had left some amazing artworks including stained glass windows. This is about using the centuries old medium and bringing it back to the community and create an awareness of our glorious stained glass past and our deep roots. This is about 'joining' 'pieces' 'together' by 'bringing them closer' to each other and then 'solder' permanently. The presence of finished artwork will be a reminder of cultural belonging as well as it will work as an eye candy for the onlookers. This is about bringing communities together through arts. Although sometimes they call it dying craft but stained glass culture is deeply rooted in hearts and minds. This is about "A Fragile Craft!!! that can lasts for centuries!
