We will build a new vibrant, accessible, inclusive music studio in the City of Sunderland. It will support our diverse local music scene through creativity and learning, as we have strived to do for almost 40 years. We will create a high-quality, multi-purpose studio to meet the needs of our local community. More than just a music studio, the new space will also host a permanent exhibition space to showcase our long history and introduce more of our community to The Bunker - where many well-established artists call ‘home. We'll be collaborating with the extensive local Music network as well as existing clients - which include many local schools, social enterprises and musicians - to ensure its success and continue to provide access and support to those who need it. We will offer a professional music facility our City can be proud of again, where people, young and old, can work in a safe, professional and comfortable environment with experienced producers and facilitators alike.

What we'll deliver:

  • Build an accessible Community music studio using professional music technology and production equipment in Sunderland.
  • Provide an engaging, creative, safe space for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Promote health & well-being through music and creative activities
  • Enlist professional music production team to work with local emerging artists and members of the Community.

Why it's a great idea:

This project will benefit the whole community as music is for everyone. It will bring high quality rehearsal and recording facilities to provide a base and space for local people to meet, make friends, develop skills. We will deliver tuition, training, support and career guidance on a range of music and arts-related topics, to budding musicians and people of all ages or abilities. We will run music-related projects aimed at hard to reach learners, people from minority groups and problematic backgrounds, who may otherwise not consider education or training as a route to employment. We will provide advice and support to build confidence and help people use music for a positive outcome. We will raise awareness and tackle cultural barriers through our interactive music projects and explore the use of music in helping the recuperation or treatment of people suffering illness. We also work with venues and other arts organisations to provide a wide range of creative opportunities.

Steps to get it done:

  • Insulate the studio to improve energy efficiency
  • Fit new ceiling and flooring
  • Install new energy efficient lighting and electrics
  • Painting & decorating
  • Install acoustic treatments
  • Install recording equipment

Donations of £50 or more receive a personalised engraved brick in our ‘Wall of Fame’ within our building. Donations of £30 or more receive a limited edition Bunker t-shirt and a certificate.

Our Volunteer List

We're currently looking for people to offer skills and time to develop our project! Check out the list of what we need below and then use the 'Volunteer' button to the right to get involved.
  • Any building materials are welcomed, from timber to tarpaulin, plasterboards to paint :)
  • Do you have an unwanted musical instrument that we can pass on to someone who needs one? Is there a guitar in the garage, banjo in the bedroom, or ukulele in your utility? We'll lovingly restore and make sure it's used again to help someone local.
  • Help from any tradesmen or experience DIY enthusiasts to help finish off fitting plasterboards, shifting rubbish, plastering, or electric work. Anything is appreciated.
