The idea
A group of elders 60+ will create and perform a theatre show inspired by two short stories by Murilo Rubião, the father of Brazilian Magic Realism. Both deal with death, loss and grief and will be the catalysts for the participants to share and discuss their views, experiences, and feelings, which will be juxtaposed to the stories in a touching and magical visual spectacle. The stories aren’t naturalistic which makes dealing with the subject much easier.
What we'll deliver
- 25 elders 60+ will socialise and have fun
- 25 elders will benefit from socialize and build up a network
- 25 elders will share their stories with the audience
Why it's a great idea
We have been offering drama projects to the 60+ in this area in partnership with the Church Street Library since 2017. Our work is about empowering them by offering the best practice in terms of content and delivery whist generating well-being through what we believe are two of the most important tools against the adversities of the process of ageing: fun and socialisation.
Death is ever so present to old people. However, it is not a topic most like to discuss. We have often stirred away from it over the 4 years we have been delivering drama projects to this group. Recently, the husband of our eldest member died and she felt the need to talk about it. Although, other members were empathic, there was a lack of willingness to listen. Death is still a taboo, and we often avoid talking about it. This project would give us the opportunity to tackle it and hopefully generate resilience and acceptance within the group.
