The Atkinson Development Trust By The Atkinson Development Trust

We would love to establish a well-being choir at The Atkinson on Lord Street in Southport for local people to come along and enjoy the healing power of music.

The Well-being Choir will be hosted on Tuesday mornings running weekly for 28 weeks, with each free session lasting two hours. The sessions are open to everyone over the age of 18 and all levels and abilities are very much welcome to attend and have a great time. At the end of the 28 weeks we hope that the choir will put on a concert at The Atkinson alongside the Southport Festival in a huge celebration of the arts. This fantastic project was inspired by Matt Dodd as part of The Atkinson Development Trust’s ‘Bright Spark’ initiative which invites staff to submit their ideas for audience-focused activities. A recent Twitter poll affirmed that this is a very welcome initiative with an overwhelmingly positive response, and such a project would provide a great dimension to The Atkinson's repertoire of events for the community.

What we'll deliver:

  • Weekly 2 hour singing sessions at The Atkinson for 28 weeks
  • A concert at the end of the 28 week session to be held at The Atkinson

Why it's a great idea:

• It’s a fantastic opportunity for members of the community to get together and develop friendships • It will help reduce isolation and loneliness • It will help improve the health and well-being of all those who participate • It will help provide for greater community cohesion, encouraging a sense of belonging and civic pride • It will provide an opportunity for members of the community to develop their singing skills and improve their confidence in their abilities

Steps to get it done:

  • To raise sufficient funds to fund 28 weeks of music tuition starting in October.
  • To host a concert at the end of the 28 weeks to coincide with the Southport Festival in the summer of 2020.
