The idea
The project is based on the Museum's Snapshot Series 'That Wilder
Bond' which invited participants to share their childhood memories,
connecting personal stories to Ireland's rich social history. The stories
will be curated into an illustrated storybook and will capture memories of childhood, family, community and nature Once the book has been
illustrated, designed and produced it will be launched in Dublin City. The book will then be donated to libraries around the capital.
The project is based on the poem ‘That Wilder Bond’ by Nicolette
Sowder.
May we raise children who love the unloved things
May we raise children who love the unloved things-the dandelion, the
worms and spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn
& run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards sun…
And when they’re grown & someone has to speak for those who have no
voice
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender
things
and be the ones.
What we'll deliver
- Design and print a storybook consisting of curated stories of childhood memories.
- Launch 'That Wilder Bond' in a central DCC library through a facilitated workshop and interviews with contributors.
- Donate copies of 'That Wilder Bond' to every DCC library.
Why it's a great idea
The book 'That Wilder Bond' will be a lasting legacy of the project and 250 copies will be donated to libraries across the Capital for the public to enjoy.
The book will be conduit for engaging children and adults in social and cultural history. It will encourage intergenerational sharing of childhood experiences, education and creativity.
The book will also be a valuable resource for family literacy programmes engaging families in shared reading through relatable experiences providing opportunities for families to engage in education and creativity through creating their own stories.
The project will promote the value of Dublin City libraries as a a cultural and learning space that is relevant to all.
Steps to get it done
- Work with a graphic designer to create the layout and format for the book.
- Arrange for printing and binding of books.
- Print banners and leaflets for the exhibition.
- Launch of the book in a DCC library and donate copies to all DCC libraries.
- Capture the impact of the exhibitions through videography and photography and share on our social media platforms.
