The Southern Run© is a new, unique, creative and galvanizing marathon that will connect people from surrounding communities in the spirit of sport and social change. The Southern Run© Marathon will take place across 5 boroughs, Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon & Bromley. The Southern Run© marathon is a community fundraising event, participants are required to raise funds for charitable causes specific to the five participating communities The purpose of our event is to connect communities so participation is available as an individual and as a community group. For group participants the run is split into stages to make it easier for people who cant run a full marathon to participate. The marathohn also aims to provide a challenging event, one that will be exciting and also tackle the level of obesity among people inside the represented boroughs.

What we'll deliver:

  • Connect people from different communities through sport
  • Create a youth focused event
  • Create an event that is sustainable
  • Attach participating communities fundraising goals to the event
  • Acknowledge community champions

Why it's a great idea:

The Southern Run has a core aim to bring communities together to create awareness and to solve problems in their community. The competition is youth led which means it has a long term aim. Youth participation is also important in the planning process to give experience for educational development. It is our aim to have our event planners work with ambassadosrs (young people) for The Southern Run so they can also learn about event planning. The event has a fundraising aim to all participants, they can choose their fundraising cause but must be focused inside the five participating boroughs. This event literally allows the community to think whilst on their feet.

Steps to get it done:

  • Recruit a full team for project development, including young people
  • register participation of runners to reach the required number of participants
  • Ensure Health and Safety measures are strictly in place

The Southern Run has a long term aim, we would like to grow the event in stages. In year 1 we aim to have a minimum number of participants but ensure that the objectives of the event, the race route, and participants are achieved correctly. By Year 5 we aim to have reached a fundraising goal of £1000000.
