The idea
Founded in 2024, Shamrock Sióga is Ireland’s first LGBTQ+ basketball club, based in Dublin 9. We aim to create a welcoming, supportive and safe environment for players of all abilities — from complete beginners to experienced players. We currently offer five weekly training sessions at DCU St. Patrick’s Campus, ensuring that everyone can find a session that suits their level and feels comfortable. As a grassroots club, one of our main challenges is the lack of storage space for equipment, which limits access to basketballs during training. Through this fundraiser, we hope to provide each member with their own ball, making sessions more efficient, encouraging practice outside of training and keeping the club accessible without the added cost of purchasing equipment.
What we'll deliver
- Give every member of Shamrock Sióga a basketball
- Make sure people who will join in the future, will receive a ball as well
Why it's a great idea
Providing each member with their own basketball will bring a wide range of benefits to both individuals and the club as a whole. It will make training sessions more efficient and enjoyable, as everyone will have the equipment they need without having to wait or share. Members will also have the opportunity to practise on their own outside of training, helping them build confidence, develop skills at their own pace and stay active between sessions. This is especially valuable for beginners, who can become more comfortable with the sport, and for experienced players who want to improve further. Additionally, removing the need to purchase a ball lowers financial barriers, ensuring that the club remains accessible to everyone in our community. Ultimately, this initiative will support personal growth, strengthen our team and help Shamrock Sióga continue building a safe, inclusive and empowering space where queer people can connect through sport.
Steps to get it done
- Give every registered member of Shamrock Sióga a basketball (67 at the moment)
- Make sure people who will join later will receive a ball as well (expected to gain 33 more members)
