The idea
The essential addition of a commercial deck oven to our bakery will take our training and production capabilities to a new standard, essential as we roll out our European Social Fund programme of accredited training opportunities over the next two years.
Through the programme we intend to reach over 100 people struggling to access routes to work in our region, focusing on some of the most deprived areas in the country.
With increased capacity we can build on our work with Spectrum Enterprises and the Department of Work and Pensions to further our volunteer and employment offer to people on the autistic spectrum.

Why it's a great idea
Big River is a social enterprise bakery with a big mission but tiny ovens. Over the next two years we’re rolling out a programme of accredited training opportunities for people facing complex barriers to achieving employment in our region. We’re thrilled that our programme is being funded by the European Social Fund, and have worked hard to bring most of the pieces together to make this opportunity a reality, but in order to reach our full training potential we desperately need to install a commercial deck oven asap!
Our tiny oven situation also impacts on our bakers who bake with ingenuity and tenacity, pushing the envelope on what can be produced out of our two convection ovens! They work double time to get our bread made, and the quality, taste and consistency of what they bake is nothing short of miraculous given current oven capacity. We have some funds in place but need to top them up to get where we need to be, so we’re reaching out for help to buy our new deck oven.
