The idea
At Ravenor Primary School, we believe it is essential to have a shared garden space for our pupils. We know that many students will not have access to a green space within their own home and we see our garden as an opportunity for them to not only have time outside, but the space also enables us to teach practically, rather than confining them to the classroom.
The current garden space has been run into a state of disrepair. Without the garden, we are lacking the ability to teach the practical side of the National Curriculum and we believe this practical element to be a vital part of a child's education.
What we'll deliver
- Refresh and maintain our garden
- Plant vegetables and flowers to educate children and support the environment
- Create space for scientific investigation
- Provide opportunities to share produce with the local community
- A 24 week professional maintancene programme
Why it's a great idea
Our aspirations are to benefit the health and well-being of children who may not have access to a garden, to help young people make the right choices about their nutrition in a fun and interactive way and to enable parents to incorporate those healthy habits into their daily lives. We wish to educate our children in developing healthy food choices and an understanding of where food comes from, through the use of the garden. As our school is situated in the borough of Ealing, we are already aware of the high levels of obesity in this area, so a garden would promote opportunities to be active and learn about healthy food choices. It would also be a great chance for parents, carers and the local community to become a part of their child’s learning. This project would also ensure we have a professional gardener who can support the children and staff in developing their knowledge, to ensure the garden is maintained long term.
Steps to get it done
