The idea
Based in the safe, welcoming environment of the new outdoor Playzone at Eastwood Park West Wylam; an area of multi-deprivation, the therapeutic youth worker will become part of the multi-activity games team, playing alongside and providing support and guidance to children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Through conversations, issues will be identified and support plans developed to enable identification and referral for additional support. Relationships and trust will be developed by using empowering coaching styles to give positive reinforcement, build confidence and improve how they feel. This coupled with physical activity which reduces anxiety, promotes self-esteem and gives a sense of control and coping ability will promote positive emotions and enjoyment of life. Collaboration with coaches/volunteers to integrate the approach and with health services staff to improve accessibility for vulnerable children to access support will be developed.

Why it's a great idea
Concerned about the future of our children, Friends of Eastwoods Park trustees/volunteers worked tirelessly to fund a Playzone and community/youth space. This inspired us to seek funding to maximise the impact with special support for those children and young people with disrupted lives through poor mental health. We currently engage local children and young people and have built up very strong relationships with those who regularly visit Eastwoods Park. The developments will attract more children, young people and members of the community.
Children will benefit from specialist guidance and support and an easier path to access mental health services. They will manage sad, worrying or angry feelings and bounce back from tough times, cope with changes, fears and uncertainties in life, make friends and learn. As well as building confidence, providing them with the skills and tools to boost their self-esteem, and empowering them to become the best, most resilient version of themselves.
Steps to get it done
- Recruitment of youth worker
- Engagement with volunteers, sport coaches and mental health professionals
- Monthly review of progress in engaging young people with youth worker
- Monthly report to charity including young people worked with and action plans produced.
Football Foundation £150k and matched £50k from local organisations’ and the community fund the new PlayZone An inclusive, accessible outdoor facility for social interaction and friendship, the new games area will provide floodlighting to ensure that the area can be utilised all year and provide a safe place for sports. The Charity’s Cafe has also had local funds to incorporate designated space for community and youth engagement. This will allow us to provide a welcoming space for young people, who want ‘somewhere to go and relax’.
To capitalize on this investment and make a real differece to chidren with poor mental health we need someone special to work with them to provide a pathway to better mental health.
