We want to provide transport for young people with learning disabilities and difficulties in West Cheshire to enable them to access community projects and activities. This will benefit more than 70 young people who use our Petty Pool In The Community service to access days out, skills development sessions and community partnership projects. Young adults from the project also enjoy forest adventure and water activities at the site of Petty Pool college. Funding will pay for a community transport vehicle.

What we'll deliver:

  • Purchase a community transport vehicle

Why it's a great idea:

Petty Pool In The Community was developed as an enrichment programme in response to the lack of activities young people with learning disabilities and difficulties could access. 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spend less than one hour outside their home on a typical Saturday. The service helps support young people with their independence skills, developing friendships and engaging in activities they enjoy. It has grown considerably over the past two years and a new vehicle will mean we can support even more vulnerable young people to access the service and get out and about in their local community. The service benefits the local community by engaging adults with learning disabilities and difficulties with volunteering and community projects in Cheshire West and Chester. They can use the skills they have learned at college to help others and improve our community spaces. Additionally, the project will support the individuals' mental health and wellbeing.

Steps to get it done:

  • Purchasing the vehicle

Members of Petty Pool In The Community all have EHCPs and present with a broad range of diagnosis, conditions and areas of need. The most prevalent conditions are Moderate Learning Difficulty (48.6%), Speech, Language and Communication Needs (46.9%), ASC (38.9%), SEMH (34.5%) and Severe Learning Difficulty (33.6%). We believe it's incredibly important for young adults with learning disabilities and difficulties to engage with their local community in West Cheshire and Chester beyond their time at specialist college. They have skills and talents which they can use to benefit their community through volunteer projects. For example, horticulture, catering and animal care. They have already taken part in projects that include supplying 100 bird boxes to local woodland, creating an outdoor memorial, planting trees at Delamere Forest and developing outdoor community spaces in Cheshire. Our vehicles are old and worn and transport is becoming a barrier for them being able to do this.
