The idea

The programme will provide the opportunity for children and young people to develop musical skills in an encouraging and creative environment. Employing the services of vocal coaches, instrumental tutors and music producers we will encourage collaborative working, develop communication skills, build self-esteem and support participants to develop the skills needed to participate in dynamic musical ensembles. Our music leaders will deliver advice and guidance regarding activities such as instrument care, rehearsal skills, stagecraft, composition, Image development and promotion at appropriate and differentiated levels. We will raise standards of musical ability of children and young people in Orford and surrounding areas and provide and/or raise awareness of progressionary pathways and opportunities for them to engage with the wider music communities in Warrington and Cheshire.

What we'll deliver

  • Purchase and install music recording system
  • Provide opportunities and support to children and young people living in the most deprived communities in Warrington.
  • Establish a thriving centre for young people's music development at Orford Youth Base

Why it's a great idea

This project will raise levels of aspiration and ambition, improve skills, attitude and employability of young people who are at risk of becoming disengaged in the most deprived areas of Warrington. Orford has twice the average level of unemployment for the Borough and the highest rates of 16--18 year olds not in employment, education or training(10.6%). It also has more referrals to social care, children on the child protection register and number of looked after children than anywhere else in the town. Not surprisingly, Orford is in the top two wards for incidents of crime, youth nuisance incidents and first time entrants to the youth justice system. Our work will help disengaged young people in the transition to a productive and fulfilling adult life. We will give them the skills required to find employment and, where necessary, move away from
insecure jobs without training, and opportunity for personal development and growth

Steps to get it done

  • Purchase and install musical recording equipment
  • Establish young people's music management team
  • Consult and construct delivery plan with young participants
  • Recruit Music Leaders and Volunteers
  • Begin delivery of music development workshops
  • Create Recordings
  • Plan and carry out performances / skill sharing
