Newcastle Film Club is a community filmmaking group based in Newcastle and serving the surrounding area. In 2023 we began collecting film and media gear through donations from the local community. The equipment given to date has been second hand, used but well taken care of gear that our members have been able to use for their film projects.
We want to upgrade and expand our kit library so that we can accommodate more people to use this equipment in order to share their culture, experiences and stories. We currently do not have club video cameras that people can request to use or club computers that people can use to edit their film together.
In order to challenge socio-economic barriers experienced disproportionately by members of our community, we aim to offer a series of completely free workshops covering a variety of filmmaking techniques nurturing transferable skills, and making space for collaboration, creation of content, and comradery.
What we'll deliver:
- The purchase of new film equipment to assist in the recording and editing of videos & short films from the community
- 6 three hour training workshops on how to use the equipment
- A short film about the Newcastle Film Club community made using the new equipment
Why it's a great idea:
This project removes obstacles for people from lower-income and diverse backgrounds who aspire to enter the world of filmmaking. By providing access to essential equipment and conducting practical workshops, the project enables individuals to share their stories authentically, ensuring a more diverse representation of voices.
Our commitment to lifelong learning means that individuals of all ages can participate in this project. The absence of age restrictions encourages a wide range of community members to explore filmmaking. This not only supports ongoing personal growth but also facilitates a cross-generational exchange of ideas and experiences, enhancing the overall community fabric.
We know the positive impact of engaging in creative pursuits on emotional and mental well-being. The act of storytelling, combined with the learning process and collaborative workshops, offers a positive outlet for creativity and self-discovery, enhancing the overall well-being of community members.
Steps to get it done:
- Equip the Community by purchasing new film equipment
- Host Inclusive Workshops
- Create a short film that highlights the diversity and unique stories within the local community
The tangible impact of the project is evident in the projects previously facilitated by the Newcastle Film Club, showcased on the club's website. These projects serve as concrete examples of the positive influence and impact of this type of project, highlighting not only the technical skills acquired through the kit library but also the broader social and cultural impact of community-driven filmmaking. The success stories inspire confidence in the project's ability to bring about meaningful change and creative expression within the community.
Some projects that have used the current kit library and wouldn’t have been possible without the film club’s help can be seen in detail on our website here - https://www.newcastlefilmclub.co.uk/member-films
