The idea
We want to ensure that even more books thrown away annually are kept out of the landfill. There are many people around the world who have never seen a book, so let's give them the chance.
In order to process more books and enable more volunteers to join our group, we need to create a bigger, better and brighter sorting space. We would like to do so by converting a 40ft shipping container at our existing premises.
We need to buy the container, kit it out with shelves, painted with specialised paint and tell everyone where we are.
What we'll deliver
- Collect 100,000 books in 12 months
- Give 275 volunteers the chance to work with us
- Buy one 40ft container
Why it's a great idea
Keeping a large volume of books out of the UK landfills.
Giving books to everyone who needs them. This could be in the UK or abroad.
Helping start libraries.
Giving 275 individuals, who feel lonely, anxious or are simply retired and looking for something to do a purpose, a meaningful engagement and a feel good factor.
Providing local businesses with the chance to provide their staff with volunteer opportunities.
Steps to get it done
- Buy a 40ft container
- Convert the container to suit
- Collect 100,000 books
- Rehome 100,000 books
We know there is a need for activities that many individuals can engage in. We also know that many books end up thrown away each year. We are already working on reducing the number of discarded books and providing more people with the opportunity to feel needed. But we also know we can do more. With better, bigger facilities.
