The idea
In the beautiful garden at Charlbury Pre School, we currently store sensory and music equipment in the old Wendy House and a shed (pictured), which are both beyond repair.
We would like to replace these with a new Music and Sensory space. The new structure will include sound, light and tactile activities for our community of up to 28 young learners, aged 2-5 years.
The space will not only improve on our existing facilities, it will also contribute towards our strategy to enhance support for children across the Special Educational Needs spectrum.
Children here spend a large part of their day in the garden and the new structure will have light and heating so it can be used all year-round. It will augment our small ‘calm space’ inside (pictured) where we have already seen how a specific area of this nature can really help our children build their fine and gross motor skills, creativity and emotional self- regulation
What we'll deliver
- Remove an old Wendy House and an old rotting shed
- Construct a new modular shed integrating a new music/sensory area and more storage/office space
- Paint the sheds, put in mats on the floor, put in donated furniture.
- Store our sensory activity equipment in the shed and start sessions!
Why it's a great idea
Charlbury Pre-School is run by a dedicated team of five Staff alongside parent volunteers. We will use the new sensory/music shed as a dedicated space for children to learn through their senses, helping cognitive, physical, emotional and social development.
This will particularly help children with additional sensory needs, as the Shed will be a space for targeted activities to appeal to all the senses. It will also help us run additional volunteer-led activities like music, art and gardening, as we will have a bigger dedicated area to deliver the sessions, and store the equipment.
Our current storage is so old that items tend to get mouldy in the damp, and children do not like spending much time in them - so we are really looking forward to building a dedicated, weather-proof space where the children will love learning!
Steps to get it done
- Removing the old wendy house and old shed
- Building the new shed
- Painting the new shed
- Install the electric pack to the shed
- Securing donations of furniture and equipment
- Starting sessions in the new shed!
