By Burton and Neston History Society
To create a memorial to commemorate the deaths of the Ness Miners (men and children). Also to give information about all the Miners who worked in the Collieries in Ness and Neston..
This campaign has now ended.
Coal mining in Neston and Ness is an extraordinary story. The historic village of Ness is proud of its memorials to Lady Hamilton, her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as well as to servicemen who lost their lives in both World Wars. What is missing is a memorial to those men and children of Ness who toiled years ago in its coalmine. Working underground in appalling conditions some, both men and children, tragically lost their lives. They too deserve to be remembered with a suitable memorial in the heart of Ness Village. In addition to the memorial, the project will have a series of interpretation boards along the shoreline from Parkgate to Burton Point - including one near the actual site of the Ness mine at the end of Denhall Quay (1759 - 1855) Mining started again in 1874 and the mine closed in 1927. Information on this will be at the bottom of Marshlands Road. Other boards will include the history of the local area such as the Old Quay and Little Neston Green.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The project will build on the recent installation of interpretation boards giving the history of Parkgate. Great interest has been shown by locals and visitors. The extra boards will encourage people to explore more of the local area. They will be able to walk along the coastal path and pause to read what is on the boards. The boards and memorial will be created by volunteers and friends of the Burton and Neston History Society and the local community. Some of the boards will not be on the coastal path but will be placed to encourage circular walks. Some of these will pass by local pubs, shops and cafes which will benefit the local economy.
Steps to get it done:
Many local residents (some possibly descendants of those miners) may wish to be part of this historic project by donating to its cost.
