The idea
Big River Bakery is a community bakery located in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne. We have grown our free food provision and baking sessions over the last four years and it now comprises -
1. making food at bakery shop available free of charge to people in need.
2. Free food wednesdays when we provide a fixed number of free meals every wednesday.
3. School breakfast bags - providing daily during term time to a local school for children who are unable to access breakfast clubs.
4. Regular free baking sessions for local people.
We aim to expand our provision by working with partner organisations particularly in East and West End locations in Newcastle.
What we'll deliver
- 300 Free meals/breakfast bags
- 6 baking sessions
- 200 Stottie baking kits
Why it's a great idea
Our free food and baking course provision at our existing bakery in Shieldfield has seen an eightfold increase in demand between january and august 2023. We have secured the name National Stottie Week to run in February starting 2024. Through tNational Stottie Week we want to demonstrate the 'Power of the Stottie' to help address the challenges faced by individuals in communities across Newcastle.
Steps to get it done
- Launch National Stottie Week
- Deliver stottie baking sessions
- Distribute free food
- Distribute stottie baking kits
Healthy affordable food is a basic human right and we aim to show how this can be achieved through National Stottie Week. The project will involve food provision, learning about local food culture and develop baking skills.
