Each of the five Areas of the City of Sunderland (Coalfield, East, North, Washington and West) has developed a Neighbourhood Investment Plan and has access to the Crowdfund Sunderland Council Grant budget to help them deliver the plan.  Each area has been allocated a minimum of £10,000 as a one-off fund in order to develop appropriate projects and attract other funding to the area. 

Crowdfund Sunderland funded projects should deliver improvements within the local area.  All decisions on funding will be made by the Crowdfund Sunderland Council Grant Assessment Board.

Projects which support delivery of the Sunderland City Plan and the emerging Neighbourhood Investment Plans.

Projects could include

- Buildings

- Green spaces and open spaces

- Food and markets

- Events and Festivals

- Sport and leisure facilities

- Activities which bring communities together and improve community resilience

What we can't fund

We cannot fund purely religious projects or projects which improve/renovate religious buildings unless it is transforming the space into an open community space. 

We cannot fund private enterprises who simply have new business idea. All projects must provide benefits to the local community.

• more creative and cultural businesses
• more residents participating in their communities
• more visitors visiting Sunderland and more residents participating in cultural events
• more people feel happy and safe in their neighbourhood
• more resilient people

- Dynamic City, by 2030 we will have: 

• more and better jobs
• more and better housing
• more local people with better qualifications and skills to enable them to participate in and benefit from a stronger economy
• a stronger city centre with more businesses, housing and cultural opportunities
• a lower carbon city with greater digital connectivity for all

1. Complete our expression of interest form – a member of the team will be in touch to provide you with the necessary information and support and invite you to a upcoming workshop.

2. Create your online project page which will match you to the Crowdfund Sunderland fund. In the pitch Sunderland Council will ask you some additional questions about your project. 

3. The project costs and necessary permissions will be checked by independent verifiers, Locality..

4.  Set you campaign live. Start by getting lots of small pledges from the community to show local support for your project. This will help unlock bigger pledges.

5. Sunderland Council will review all project campaigns and successful projects can expect to receive a pledge a month after they start their campaing. 

6.  Hit your target and deliver your project

Projects crowdfunding as part of this programme can receive a pledge of up to 50% of their target up to £1,000 per fund (a total of £3,000 across the three funds)

This fund is made up of £50,000 from the Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group and £50,000 from Public Health. Projects can get up to £3,000 from each fund.

It is designed to support projects which enable Sunderland to be a healthy city, where people live healthier lives for longer, with people accessing our wonderful natural assets such as our beaches, parks.

Examples of projects and activities that we would be interested in supporting includes the following, however we are flexible and keen to hear about projects in general that ‘think out of the box’.

- Pilot projects or activities exploring the delivery of new activities or approaches which make Sunderland a greater place to live, work and play - Pilot projects or activities exploring the delivery of new activities which make Sunderland a health city

- Innovative projects or activities that bring different sections of the community together, that may not usually come together

- Projects and activities where an organisation wish to experiment with something, that is outside of their normal area of work and would like the opportunity to ‘just try it’.

- Projects and activities that involve organisations that have not previously worked together, coming together to achieve new outcomes

A fund is designed to support the delivery of the priorities and target outcomes outlined within the Sunderland City Plan, in particular the Healthy City theme; and emerging area Neighbourhood Investment Plans

The City Plan, approved by full Council on 12 November 2019, has three themes:

• by 2030 Sunderland will be a dynamic city with more and better jobs, it will be on course to become a low-carbon economy with a great choice of housing. It will be a digitally connected City providing fibre to every premise, and the best ultra-high capacity, low latency wireless network for its businesses, residents and visitors
• it will be a healthy city where people will live healthier lives for longer, with people accessing our wonderful natural assets such as our beaches, parks and countryside
• and it will be a vibrant city, rich with the diversity of great creative and cultural businesses. The residents of Sunderland will be active, enjoying a fulfilling cultural life, and clean, green and safe neighbourhoods
