We want to build a traditional tipi in our woodland, providing space for stories, shelter from the weather and giving children coming to "the Learning Tree" the experience of living close to nature.

The Learning Tree is a holistic and therapeutic outdoor learning project based on the Urb Farm in Wolverton. Anchored on the principles of Forest School we provide nature-based education and play for children of all ages and abilities. We would like the children of our community to be able to experience a different view of life by building a traditional tipi in the woodland at the farm. Not only will this provide a sheltered outdoor classroom it will offer children the chance to experience how many people across the world live – not separate from nature but in harmony with it. The "Learning Tree" sessions involve cooking on campfires, using saws and drills to create nature-based crafts, building dens, identifying trees and creatures, and exploring the amazing things that nature has to offer. We would also like to install a secure lock-up container which will enable us to safely store the many resources and equipment used for "the Learning Tree".

What we'll deliver:

  • Purchase and build a traditional tipi
  • Purchase and install a secure lock-up container

Why it's a great idea:

We allow people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to come to the farm and enjoy exploring the great outdoors. Our current regular "Learning Tree" sessions involve: children aged 6 months to 14 years old; young people aged 15-25, some with severe learning difficulties, some no longer in the mainstream school system or at risk of exclusion; home educated children; local youth groups and uniformed organisations and numerous visitors at our regular community events.

Steps to get it done:

  • Container is delivered and set up near the "Learning Tree" area
  • Build the tipi in the woodland area at the Urb Farm
  • Purchase lock-up container
  • Purchase traditional tipi
  • Resources can be stored safely and securely in the container
