The idea

We will provide emotional support, food and essentials and children's activity packs to kinship families in Sunderland to help them through covid 19. Kinship families often have difficult and complex lives and struggle at the best of times and as there is no statutory responsibility for local authorities to support them they often receive little or no support. Kinship children often display extremely challenging behaviour and often have conditions such as autism, adhd or fetal alcohol syndrome. Being in isolation will be extremely difficult for these families and without support their is a risk of the child's placement breaking down resulting in the child being returned to the care system. There is also a risk of these children experiencing hunger as their carers struggle with the increased costs of feeding them now the children can't attend school. Some kinship children can also be extremely violent towards their carers and so there is an increased risk of harm to the carer.
