The idea

We have access to a great space at Jubilee Lodge where young people with learning disabilities or autism can learn to grow flowers and veg, enjoy being outdoors and make a contribution to the upkeep of Osterley Park. Not just a gardening project, participants gain confidence, improve their communication skills, create something useful and enjoy working as a team.

We like using reclaimed materials and recycling, so will use old railway sleepers or pallets, have been gifted some patio slabs, and will use natural elements such as logs from fallen trees.

What we'll deliver

  • Install a sink to our outside toilet
  • Install some seating
  • Build some wheel-chair accessible raised beds
  • Create a paved area

Why it's a great idea

Young people with learning disabilities or autism are keen to be a part of the community and to make a contribution. At Our Barn we are able to provide skilled and experienced support that allows our participants to grow and develop as individuals as well as become part of a team. Participants take ownership of the project, make decisions on what is planted and where and learn skills such as time management and budgeting, and planning what tools and equipment they need to complete a task.

Steps to get it done

  • Install sink to outside toilet
  • Build a firepit
  • Create a seating area
  • Create raised beds
  • Lay paving slabs

In twelve months we managed to donate 4,000 volunteer hours to Osterley Park and other public green spaces. We are ambitious for our group and believe many participants are capable of employment. We have other projects that focus on that.
