Whitley Bay Cricket Club By Whitley Bay Cricket Club

Whitley Bay Cricket Club is looking to maximise the playing opportunities for all local residents and visiting teams, making cricket both a pleasurable and beneficial pastime to both play and watch.

Whitley Bay Cricket Club has come a long way from the run down facilities that it occupied in the early 2010's. The members have done a lot of work to improve the pavilion and the match day experience. In 2021 we finally felt that we were able to reintroduce Junior Cricket to the club after an absence of 30 years in a safe and secure environment. We now run 2 Saturday League teams, a Sunday XI, a Midweek XI, a U11 Friendly Team, U13 League Team and an U15 League Team. In addition we are a development hub for All Stars and Dynamos (the ECB developmental programme) and host both another midweek team and in 2024 we will host Northumbria University 2nd XI. In 2022 we were awarded Clubmark by the ECB - an award which recognised all the hard work that had been done. In order to maintain our development and the uptake by local youngsters we now need to improve the playing facilities to a standard that allows both the Junior and Senior teams to develop and play in a safe environment.

What we'll deliver:

  • Mobile Covers so that more matches can take place
  • Portable practice nets
  • Concertina fence at the front of the pavilion

Why it's a great idea:

The provision of mobile covers will allow us to protect the playing surface whilst also bringing us in line with other clubs around the region - this can make a difference to Junior cricket being able to happen or having to be cancelled - therefore increasing opportunities for all. The portable practice net will provide a secure environment for out 70 young players to develop and become better cricketers hopefully leading to a lifelong love of the game. This will benefit both players at Whitley Bay and the 300 other visiting juniors in the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the benefits of physical activity by helping to make the teams more competent and competitive and therefore build confidence in their own abilities. The concertina fence will replace the current fence that protects the pavilion. This will improve the viewing experience for all spectators by allowing the fence to be folded back and the view of the game to be uninterrupted.

Steps to get it done:

  • Quote for concertina fence x3
  • Purchase of mobile covers
  • Purchase of portable net
  • Construction of Covers
  • Construction of net
  • Panels removed from current fence
  • Concertina panels installed
  • Use of covers on matchday pitches
  • Use of portable nets in both Junior and Senior practice

The club has made a lot of progress over the past 2 years - from starting a Junior section to now having 70 junior members taking part over the programmes we offer. This project looks to build the best possible environment for these young players to improve, compete and thrive. In a time when Physical Activity levels are dropping in young people we believe that this project will encourage more people to take up sport and experience the transformational effects that this can have on life. The reach of this project is not only on the residents of Whitley Bay but also on all who visit with teams coming from over 100 miles away to play at the ground therefore it not only brings health benefits but also extra revenue into the local area.
