The history of Burgess Hill is closely linked with clay brick and tile manufacture.
We have received a quotation from a local company to do a sympathetic restoration using local authentic materials.
What we'll deliver
- Safe, attractive and sympathetic restoration of the heritage pavement and explanatory plaque
Why it's a great idea
A safe pavement in sympathy with the environment, celebrating the clay making history and explaining this in a plaque. The current structure is unsafe and the landlord/owner is concerned that if it is not tarmaced over he runs a risk on safety grounds. We wish to keep the historic pavement, as a reminder of our clay making history, make the pavement safe and attractive, in keeping with the Victorian building. From an environment point of view, brick affords better drainage.. The plaque will educate and inform local residents and visitors of the long history of brick,tile and pottery making here, a story going back 4 centuries.
Steps to get it done
- Completion of the plaque showing story of town and date work finished
Brick paving is environmentally sound as it allows for natural drainage, as opposed to tarmac, which does not allow for natural drainage. Restoration in the original brick will enhance the street scene and illustrate, with a plaque, the heritage of clay brick,tile and pottery products, going back 400 years.
